Polyester belongs to the family of polymers, which are often encountered in everyday life namely in plastic products. For the most part, the polyester fibres are combined in textiles, for example in many of your t-shirts, upholstery and of course those infamous polyester suits from the 1970s. Polyester was created in 1941 by British scientists John Rex Whinfield and J.T. Dickson. To produce polyester, the so-called melt spinning process is used. Polymers are melted under heat and then pressed through spinning nozzles. This creates fine fibres, which are later processed into clothing and other products. Depending on the manufacturing method, these fibres may also be more durable or have a shine.

Properties and Advantages of Polyester

The advantages of polyester are that it has lasting durability and is also very easy to care for (polyester is easy to wash and dries quickly). Many polyester fabrics can be washed up to 60℃. It is always best to follow the instructions on the care label. In the dryer, polyester should be placed on a low heat level, since it can shrink at high temperatures. Polyester is a practical material which hardly stretches or wrinkles. Ironing is not necessary with polyester materials.

Polyester fabric also supports air circulation and will not soak when exposed to sweat or humidity. Unlike cotton, polyester allows perspiration and water to evaporate more easily. This is because polyester consists of very small pores, which make it difficult to absorb water. This material is especially suitable for sportswear and bed linen.

Another feature of polyester is that it stores heat very well and is particularly soft.

Polyester and the Emma Cover

The top cover of our Emma mattresses consists of polyester fibres to keep the mattress moisture-free yet breathable. It is removable and machine washable. The Emma Mattress cover consists of special climate fibre that regulates humidity and provides traction thanks to its anti-slip elements at the bottom. At the same time, the cover is elastic and adapts perfectly to your body.
